After a year of some of the best performers that NZ. has had touring I didn’t think it could get any better down at the Club. Then came ‘ The Wheeze and Suck Band ‘ from Sydney, Australia. Five ex-pat. pommies from all parts of England that play a style of traditional colonial folk. Now to me folk music has many facets and for me most of those facets could do with a good polish. These Wheeze and Suckers have rightfully carved their own niche in the folk world.
Their performance was one of confidence and passion, immaculate timing and superb musicianship. Their four part harmonies became another instrument to excite the listener. The Wheezers have their own sound that had 8 to 80 year olds tapping their feet and clapping their hands in time with them. Oamaruvians were even dancing !!!
At the risk of singling out any member of the band, Tony Pyrzakowski ( on fiddle ) who the rest of the band said had sold his soul to the devil gave the band ‘ the edge ‘. He played the blues of the Irish west coast or evoked the wild screaming sound of a Stratocaster through a big Marshall amp. and the rest of the band backed him to the hilt.
Thanks again you geezers… I for one, look forward to seeing you again… www.wheezeandsuck.com
