The Penguin Club 20th Birthday

  1. Dave Snow says:

A couple of reviews of this in the Dunedin music club newsletter, one from Dave Snow.
    The Penguin Review

It’s not normal for me to be doing a review of an evenings entertainment as I’m usually too busy playing with knobs to remember much of what’s gone on…but,

As Annie asked so nice I thought I better put down some thoughts on the splendid job our southern cousins did to help celebrate our 20th birthday.

Apart from the fact that the bus trip (as always) was a major part of the night, and that the blackboard seemed jam packed from the start, the feedback I got from you guys was great. Glad you all had a good night..

Great set Spice Weasels.. Kay, Bernie, Mike and Brian. Good to hear some classic 80’s rock. Cheep trick and blondie got nothing on you guys and they had twice the gear, and roadies. I almost expected some gary newman or ultravox. (sigh) one day

Katharticus was a real crowd pleaser with all down front moshing to the groove.

Took a while to get going.. but quite a bit of gear matirialised from the side door and there ya go….. 2 drummers, and why not. .Mike ,Peter, Keith and Josh, nice show , keep it different it’s Always appreciated at the P club

Graham , Garth and Boog up next with a rather full on set of originals that reminded me of the Punk era but with less razor blades (was that their own fan club down front ?) Anyway the place was bouncing for a while after they stopped so it must have been good.

To my reckoning 45 musos took the stage to entertain us. Brilliant effort all round.

As for the rest of the nights entertainment….well it’s a bit of a blurr (as most of the night was for a few)

Really good to see you guys up here. We had an awesome time, I’m sure you guys did.

The big raffle went your way and I know you will find a spot for it in your hallowed halls.

If ive gotten any names wrong or forgotten anybody just blame Annie (I do)

And remember, its not about the perfect lead break or the biggest amp or the tightest jeans, or the latest roland synth.. its all about music and sharing it with friends

(but what the f@#K does a button monkey know J )

    Keep it real

    Dave

  2. Dooley says:

dooley here.mmmm….a review on the penguin club?.well we all met at the dn.muso’s to embark on our journey.just after 3pm people started arriving and milling about at the club, there was the smell of an impending party looming,a party that was going to be a bit naughty and slightly roudy to say the least.a good mix of conservatism and alternative turned out for the day.30 or so of us piled on

to the bus alcohol and all.i jumped straight up to the back seat corner window and was soon followed by garth campbell, boog roberts with pania and debbie, yes thats our boog, always more than one in tow.any way off we go.the back seat crew quickly became a rambunctious affair,so at this point i decided to bring some sanity to light and introduced a variety of sand flounder songs, songs where you substitute hook lines from popular tunes and use the words sand and or flounder,eg:honky tonk flounder, like a bridge over troubled flounder,no flounder no cry etc etc.soon the back seat crew including a few others, danny our resident artist, and marty simpson were soon to join in.loydd and katrina were having trouble keeping us under control so eventually gave up.oh, and the bus had gearbox trouble, poor josh,he was our driver, lovely guy, most tolerant.so,eventually we arrived at the penguin club,it had a good atmosphere going on, lovely local hospitality including a free barby of sausages onions and burger patties. the music was a mixed bag of acoustic folk, down home country skiffle and light rock provided by our oamaru counter parts.

at 9:30 the dunedin muso’s club were allocated to the stage.

the spice weasels were first up with a variety of popular and not so popular covers and reasonably well recieved.

    thanks k. murphy and co.

next up were dunedin originals band katharticus,is that how it is spelled?,i;d had a few drinks by now.they were well recieved by a few young revellers up the front.

by now it was myself, boog and garths turn to get up,boy should that have never happened, lol after 8888888 hrs of solid drinking..and lots of…..and a bit of…..plus that……other thing.

hell of alot of fun though, gotta say.

thanks annie and kat for throwing it together, and good on ya mike bent for making it to join us at whack a whitey.

oh and thanks sharpy for eventually seeing the light and hanging with us up the back but not getting into quite as much trouble

    cheers, over and out.
