As he says of himself..

“I actually wanted to be a drummer. Five minutes after my folks heard that news, they bought me a guitar.

But far beyond the comic view on life that comes from years of touring and having persued degrees in computer science, mathematics and music. Richard delivers a vast range of styles from slide to blue grass, classical to latin and a few no one has a name for yet im sure.

As well as touring Richard spends a great deal of time tutoring. From beginners to seasoned professionals, and is happy to share the stage with young local talent Joseph Balfe for what promises to be a great nights entertainment.

Auckland based duo Tattletale Saints is vocalist, guitarist, songwriter Cy Winstanley and vocalist, double bassist Vanessa McGowan.

Originally part of London based 4-piece band, Her Make Believe Band, Winstanley and McGowan recorded the debut TTS album How Red Is the Blood in January 2013 in Nashville, TN with Grammy winning producer and multi instrumentalist Tim O’Brien.

Funded with the support of over 220 of the duos fans, the album is being released in New Zealand via DRM and Rhythmethod on March 29th 2013.

Cy Winstanley cut his musical teeth in New Zealand singing, playing guitar and harmonica and, after a passing teenage obsession with guitar rock, discovered bluegrass, jazz and blues. He met fellow New Zealander, bassist Vanessa McGowan in a local jazz big band.

Following the urge to discover his Liverpudlian roots, Cy moved to London in 2004 and spent 7 years busking, writing and playing around the country including performances in London at The Forum supporting the Violent Femmes, Royal Festival Hall, The Borderline, Cornbury Festival and Toast Festival.

In 2005 Vanessa left New Zealand to do a Masters of Music in Jazz Bass on scholarship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas she performed with some of America’s most revered jazz musicians including Chris Potter, Joe La Barbera, Marlena Shaw and Ruth Brown, as well as touring Costa Rica and performing in New York City at the International Association For Jazz Education Conference and Dizzy’s Club at The Lincoln Centre.

Upon their reunion in 2007, Cy convinced Vanessa she could sing, showed her how to play a country 2-feel, and Her Make Believe Band was born.

Performing as a duo, Cy and Vanessa presented Cy’s songs in their rawest form, with just acoustic guitar, double bass and voices described as “love letters between Amy Mann and a slip-sliding Paul Simon”.

In April 2010 Her Make Believe Band toured New Zealand for the first time, introducing their home audience to the duo’s unique blend of country/folk/pop. Cy then spent a period living and working in Malaysia as a guest jazz vocalist and guitarist at an established jazz club, while Vanessa began writing and arranging for her first solo offering ‘Mermaids and Whiskey’ which was released in October 2012.

Vanessa and Cy returned to NZ permanently, renaming their new incarnation, Tattletale Saints.

After a highly successful PledgeMe crowd funding campaign, Tattletale Saints traveled to Nashville, TN in January 2013 to record their first Tattletale Saints album. With Grammy Award winner Tim O’Brien producing, the album was recorded at the Butcher Shoppe Recording Studios with renowned engineer David Ferguson. The studio is part owned by acclaimed singer-songwriter John Prine and is the birthplace of many of Johnny Cash’s hit records.

Following the release of the new album the duo will embark on an extensive nationwide album release tour in April/May.

Praise for Vanessa McGowan and Cy Winstanley

“In Cy Winstanley they have a potent songwriter with a voice gently reminiscent of Paul Simon, while fellow Kiwi Vanessa McGowan adds beguiling harmonies” Uncut Magazine

“A delightful album…hooks you in with melodies and keeps you there by virtue of the words…very sharp stuff”. Graham Reid, Elsewhere.co.nz

“…a masterful blend of Americana fused with Jazz, Soul and Pop… “ www.themusiccritic.co.uk

“Winstanley’s songs are intelligent and original” Country Music People Magazine

“Beautiful melodies with a fragility that is a joy to behold… “Crack Magazine UK

“Their songs are as pretty and romantic as the Southern Cross itself. Sweetened by Cy’s mellifluous delivery and double bass player Vanessa McGowan’s gorgeous harmonies, they sound like love letters between Amy Mann and a slip-sliding Paul Simon.” The Crypt Sessions

“Celebrated as one of the most exciting new alternative country acts around, Her Make Believe Band have undoubtedly created some beautiful and original tunes…They have the right mix of smart lyrics and sweet melodies that appeal to the old romantic in me.” Morning Star

The launch of Tui Folk album award winner Chris Prowse’s new “alt-history” album There Goes The Shiner will take place at the Penguin Club in Oamaru. This is an event not to be missed.
“There Goes The Shiner is a collection of original songs and instrumentals inspired by the John A. Lee stories about the colonial rouseabout Ned Slattery known as ‘The Shiner’, who “swagged his way around Canterbury and Otago at the end of the gold boom,” explains Chris. “Slattery was known for his jokes and tricks, especially to score a free glass of Irish whisky from the local shanty.”
The Shiner belonged to the good old times which were not so good, to the days of colonial romance.
The Shiner was very much part of Oamaru’s history, and There Goes The Shiner tells some of the stories of that time. He was a likable character who provided light relief and humour to the hard working colonialists.
The Oamaru Mail would report his arrival when he swagged into town and voices would say – “There Goes The Shiner”.

Together, their music is a mixture of folk and rock, both playing a variety of instruments.

Mara & the Bushkas first album “Live at Bats” is now out on independent release, available in stores and her on the website, just visit the music page!
With a style of songwriting equally as eclectic as her background, Mara delivers an old soul voice reminiscent of Janis Joplin but with a fresh perspective and sound akin to the likes of Emiliana Torrini and Sia Furler.

WOLF AT YOUR THROAT
This summer Osmium emerge ritualistically from the depths of the South for
their fourth National tour. Forging a heavy, melodic groove, Osmium deliver
a devastating live performance; like a wolf at your throat. Since releasing
their second album ?The Misery Harvest? on both CD & vinyl, Osmium have

proven their diversity, playing shows with Shihad, Sinate, The Heavy Metal
Ninjas & New Way Home ? not to mention headlining their own album release
tour comprising of ten dates across the country.
Three years on from their 2008 release ?Relentless Primal Being,? Osmium?s

new album represents the bands immense depth of experience and musical
prowess. Self-produced by the band, with artwork by Vance Kelly (Down, The
Sword, Trivium et. al.), ?The Misery Harvest? is a ten-track lesson in the

art of heavy rock. Recent reviews include this, from the Southland Times:

“Tight? My oath this is. On their murderous second album,
expat-Invercargill trio Osmium easily surpass any international baseline
specs for the groove metal genre and then some.
Throughout The Misery Harvest, the band’s aggression and intensity are
focused through an aperture with a white-hot lens.
There’s a consistency of performance and presentation here that lifts the
bar for local hard rock releases and demonstrates what can be achieved with
good, old-fashioned song craft and musicianship.?

                        – Chris Chilton (The Southland Times).

The renowned Kerry-based uillean piper and low whistle player Eoin Duignan is to tour NZ in January and February 2013 with international bouzouki, ukulele and guitar player Jon Sanders.
Playing original and traditional compositions, the two musicians blend their reed, wind and stringed instruments, taking audiences on a freewheeling journey over rugged Atlantic coastlines, Kerry mountains, to Britany in France, Galicia in Spain and even as far as the dry dusty Himalayan foothills in Afghanistan.
Eoin and Jon first met in Dingle, Co Kerry 12 years ago. There was an immediate musical rapport between them. They formed the group ARÚ (meaning both before and after in the Irish Language) and Eoin went on to record pipes on Jon Sanders acclaimed album Latitudes while Jon added his unique style to Eoin’s Ancient Rite and Lumina albums. They have since co-produced on a wide variety of music and film projects including the release of the single Kachina with Glen Hansard, the Oscar winning star of the movie Once. They toured NZ in 2008 and 2009 funded through the Irish Arts Council to great acclaim and have performed all over Europe and the US.
“If music offers a window to the soul, then that of the piper and low whistle player Eoin Duignan is a kaleidoscopic fanlight into a world where the spirit reigns supreme “, says Siobhán Long of The Irish Times. Eoin’s distinctive musical style ranges from haunting slow airs to lively percussive reels and jigs which have enchanted audiences worldwide and set them dancing wherever he has played.
Music critic Mike O’Hare said of Jon’s latest album Twigs of the Neem Tree, “a therapeutic journey through music that shows Jon’s love for the guitar, bouzouki and ukulele. If music is indeed therapy then Jon Sanders has a degree in it. The Bard of the Bouzouki and the Duke of Uke,” The Irish Times described Jon’s music as “A canny musical curiosity that refuses to be boxed in.”
